At WPPI this week, I got a firsthand look at what it really takes to run a successful commercial photo shoot.
I had the chance to sit in on a spec fitness campaign led by Paul Weaver of VSCO Freelance Photographer fame. Watching him work was worth the trip alone.
Here are the biggest lessons I took away:
What stood out most was how much leadership shapes a shoot.
Paul was calm, clear, and decisive. He kept things moving while making space for ideas. That balance created an environment where everyone felt comfortable contributing and staying focused. Commercial work is not just technical. It is about managing energy and helping people do their best work.

Lauren was our talent, and she crushed it.
Paul treated her like a creative partner, not just a subject. He made sure she had what she needed, including plenty of water since we were shooting outside in a Las Vegas parking lot. He also invited her input on poses and movement, which gave us more range and authenticity in the final images.

Commercial photography is not just about a striking image. It is about making sure the brand shows up clearly and intentionally.
That might mean catching light on a logo just right or smoothing a wrinkle so branding looks clean. Small details matter, especially when your portfolio is being reviewed by a brand manager.

You are not shooting for one hero image. You are building options.
That means capturing wide, mid, and tight shots in both vertical and horizontal formats. Some images may be used for print or large format digital. Others may be for social media. Each medium has different needs, and you have to anticipate that in the moment.

Paul was constantly scanning the environment for new angles and ways to use the architecture of the parking garage to frame the subject.
Near the end of the shoot, I spotted a light well that felt special. I showed Paul, and we pivoted. It ended up being a highlight location for many of us. It was a great reminder to come in with a plan but stay open to better opportunities.

I am already looking forward to the next spec shoot workshop. Experiences like this sharpen my craft and expand my community. Learning from masters while connecting with other photographers is just as valuable as the images themselves.
On to the next one. 📸💪
